I had a wonderful time chatting to Nicola Whyte the debut writer of 10 Marchfield Square about how she was inspired by the nooks of London and Douglas Adams’s whodunnits. We also discuss planning the middle of a novel, “soft boiled crime”, designing author websites, and we get nostalgic about the Ottakars book chain and much, much more!
I chat with Sarah Pinborough, the bestselling and award-winning author of Behind Her Eyes about her new thriller We Live Here Now, spooky houses, her method of ‘triple writing’, going on tour and the lies we tell each other…
MARK: What’s the best happy accident of your writing career?
NADINE: I’d say that not reading the small print when I entered the city university competition, because, honestly, if I’d read the small print, then I would have read that: if you win the competition, you win a £2,000 bursary. And I know definitely back then, if I’d read that it was a bursary of the Creative Writing Masters, then I wouldn’t have entered because I’m thinking, I’m already working full time, you know, being a lawyer. But I was also teaching in the law school and I would do that in the evenings. So, I don’t want to spend any more time in a classroom. I give up my evenings as it is, you know, teaching in a classroom. Why would I want to go back? Why would I want to go back to school to learn how to write? So if I’d read the small print, I would not have entered. But because I did not read the small print, I entered and won the competition, did the Creative Writing MA, I and I wrote the Jigsaw Man, so… Is that a happy accident?
MARK: Absolutely, yes. It is. Absolutely. Fantastic. Yeah. Who reads the small print? Honestly, we all sign up to META and it says in there, you know, 17 pages down, we can steal everything you put up here. So yeah, anyway, enough of that.
This month’s special guest Nicola May reveals a tip for naming your characters that will save you time in the long run…

MARK: So, let’s start with what small thing has made a big difference to your creative process?
NICOLA: I mean, again, I found this quite hard, but what I do do is… all my heroines have very short names; four letters or three letters. Ruby, Avy, Rosa. Victoria’s Vic. Because if you think how many times you type that in a manuscript, it saves you so much time. I mean, if you have something like Everard or, I don’t know, Christopher, you don’t want to be writing that… all those times. Although it’s good for word count.
MARK: I’m writing something at moment that has a character called Michael, and I’m four chapters in and already I’m thinking, I just want to call him Mike.
NICOLA: Yeah. You know, and I bet you you’ll have to go back because you will have so many wrong spellings of that as well.
MARK: Exactly. Yeah.
NICOLA: But it’s a little point, but it’s a good point. And also don’t choose a name that people can’t understand like Niamh, or things like that because there is nothing worse… As a reader, I hate it when I don’t know how to say the name.
MARK: You have to go to one of those those YouTube channels where they tell you how to pronounce it. Yeah, yeah,
NICOLA: Because I’ve got I’ve got a Joti in my book, would you say Joti or Jotti? And my audiobook narrator… I didn’t think actually to brief her on that.
MARK: I was going to mention this later. I went to the audiobook recording for The Corn Bride yesterday. And once I was in the room with them, they had a list. You know, it’s how you pronounce that? How are you pronouncing that? I. And I was like… (makes a non-commital noise). I don’t have strong opinions either way.
NICOLA: I never want to meet my narrator, because I’ve got one character who has an accent of someone who’s traveled many places abroad. So you don’t know where she’s from. And I put that on the brief. I’m like, oh my God, the poor woman.
In a sort of podcast exchange scheme, I was delighted to be invited on Zoë Richards’ Write, Damn It! podcast (she, of course, came on my Creative Differences podcast last month).
We discuss self-publishing and the quirks of traditional publishing and… I also sound quite maudlin at points as I was in something of a low point when we recorded this as you’ll hear (though chatting with Zoë cheered me up no end).
